Dolce and Gabbana is a luxury Italian fashion house founded in 1985 in Milan Italy by Italian designers Domenico Dolce (Sicily 1958)and Stefano Gabbana(Milan 1962). The two designers met in 1980 and designed for the same fashion house where Gabbana became a mentor of such to Dolce. The two designers were known as "the boys" as they were still very young, this collection was heavy on black lace and was a 'Sicilian Window' look. A year later their first store opened in Milan. The brand then started to export designs to the United States where they founded their own showroom in 1990. In 1992 they launched their first menswear collection and launched their first perfume. They won the Woolmark Award in 1991 and The Perfume’s Academy “most feminine flavour of the year in 1993 for their fragrance Dolce & Gabbana Parfum. Throughout the 90's the duo were famous for their feminine, colourful garments, which stood in stark contrast to the wave of minimalism that was sweeping across fashion at the time. some of their signature designs and trademarks included 'underwear as outerwear', animal prints and taking inspiration from 'real women' - for several seasons, runways and campaigns. By the end of the 1990’s the company revenues were around 500 million US dollars and in 2003 their revenues reached 633 million Us dollars. The couple stated they would retire by the age of 40 however that was a promise they happily didn't keep. Success was imminent, and very quickly, the designers saw the opportunity to diversify their collections, and the launch of their first men's collection followed in 1990, followed by diffusion line D&G in 1994.
