Primary Research - Questionnare

Image
My aim of this questionnaire is to find out about the following things, sustainability, controversies, animal cruelty and online/ in store sales. I wanted to know this so that when it comes to the recommendation part of report I have an idea what the consumer cares about the most. I posted these questions on my Instagram page and took the results after 24 hours. Because this questionnaire was posted on instagram the age range of the audience would be from 16-25. This shows that these results are for the younger demographic of Dolce and Gabbana and potentially the next generation of consumers. 1. When buying from a luxury brand do you take into consideration sustainability?   299 voted on this post 127 people said yes and 172 people said no. This was 42%yes and 58% no. This shows that almost half of consumers take into account sustainability, By not being sustainable and helpful to the environment Dolce and Gabbana could lose 42 out of 100 customers. 2. If a b...

Sustainability

Image
Sustainability: links:  https://www.rankabrand.org/sustainable-luxury-brands/Dolce+&+Gabbana http://www.dolcegabbana.com/corporate/en/group/code-of-ethics.html Dolce and Gabbana has achieved the E-label. This is the lowest possible score for sustainability. They haven't communicated nothing concrete about the policies for environment, carbon emissions or labor conditions in low-wages countries. For is as consumers, it is unclear wether Dolce and Gabbana is committed to sustainability or not.  According to the Dolce and Gabbana website and code of ethics, they state that respect for the environment is a fundamental value that the company pursues by adopting a sustainable conduct when performing its activities and supporting initiatives and projects to combat climate change. However I couldn't find any projects Dolce and Gabbana have done to combat climate change like they state. However unlike many luxury brands Dolce and Gabbana do a sale with their previ...

Animal cruelty and ethics

Image
Animal Cruelty Dolce and Gabbana is NOT a cruelty free brand. This means that the brand tests on animals or finances animal testing. Dolce and Gabbana were exposed for torturing rabbits for 'Orylag fur'.  Orylag is a genetically manipulated breed of rabbit developed by France's national institute for agricultural research. The fur is known for its dense feel and is used by several luxury fashion brands including Dolce and Gabbana. The brand was recently exposed for the cruelty and torture of the rabbits. They found that there are hundred of rabbits forced to stand on wire floors for months and never seeing the light of day. They spend their entire lives in cramped dark cages and are confined to darkness for months. They suffer from dehydration, malnutrition and wounds as well as other injuries. One in four rabbits found in these facilities died from these stressors before they were scheduled for slaughter. those who survived were hung by there paws and there th...

Labour Conditions/ Fairtrade

Links: https://www.rankabrand.org/sustainable-luxury-brands/Dolce+&+Gabbana In a report about labour conditions and fair trade there was a lot of blank spaces and gaps about what rules there are in place. 1. Does the brand have a supplier Code of conduct which includes the following standards: No forced or slave labour, no child labour, no discrimination of any kind and a safe and hygienic workplace? -Dolce and Gabbana published a 'code of ethics' with some general statements about supplier ethics and environment. However, this information is not sufficiently specific. 5. Does the brand have a published list of direct suppliers, that have collectively contributed to more than 90%of the purchased volume? - Dolce and Gabbana does not communicate any information about being part of a collective and innovative or purchasing from an accredited supplier. 8. Is there a policy for the brand for capacity building at the apparel manufacturers for improved labour practices...

Tax Evasion

Tax Evasion In June 2013 the Italian design duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were convicted by a lower court for failing to file tax declarations for the Luxembourg company Gado which was a subsidiary for Dolce and Gabbana. Prosecutors alleged Gado was set up to evade paying taxes in Italy. The case refers to the 2004 sale of its signature and D&G lines. The two denied charges and they breifly shut their Italian stores in protest. In April 2014 they were sentenced with a 20 month suspended jail sentence. The pair spent nearly 4 years trying to clear their names. Dolce's lawyer, Massimo Dinoia told 'WWD' that the latest ruling meant the case "is definitely closed with an unquestionable verdict that does not admit uncertainties: there is no case to answer. This case was long and draining for both the designers and the company, the focus was changed to being on the case rather than on the designs and progress of the company. This could have affected the sa...

It showed racist imagery of coloured women, and 'Mammy earrings'. Dolce and Gabbana say that the designs are inspired by their Sicilian heritage. There were rustic, flour sack dresses and examples of Sicilian basket-weaving. The set for their 2013 spring summer show at Milan fashion week was a balcony lined with ivy and cacti. The models wore fruit cornucopias and earrings of black women and the faces of coloured ladie...

Slavery Sandals.

Slavery Sandals Links: https://splinternews.com/dolce-gabbana-s-spring-line-includes-a-slave-sandal-1793855164 https://fashionista.com/2016/03/dolce-and-gabbana-slave-sandals In the Spring collection of 2016 Dolce and Gabbana released a sandal named "Slave sandal" and has increased racist connotations of the brand. This sandal cost $2,395 and was made from leather.  "The Spring - Summer collection 2016 was a declaration of love to Italy, told through unique clothing and accessories on an imaginary journey through the wonders of this country," Dolce & Gabbana's website says of its new line. After people disagreed with this they changed the name of the sandal to "Decorative Flat Sandal In Napa Leather With Pom Poms" however the word "slave" was still embedded within their URL's. This is yet another controversy that could have been avoided and should never of been released with the name "slave sandal", this...

This collection was aimed at muslim consumers with a range of abayas and hijabs in its signature colourful prints. The prints included flowers, fruits and polkadots, constructed in delicate silks whilst others are comprised of neutral lace and satin - all demonstrating the dramatic femininity that the brand has built its name on. A number of luxury brands are making moves to target the Muslim market, particularly as growth in retail in the Arab world outpaces that in Asia and Russia. Many labels now create Ramadan collections, as the religious celebration gains recognition as a time of increased retail activity f...

Racism controversy 2018

Image
Shangai fashion week 2018 Dolce and Gabbana had to postpone a catwalk in Shanghai after an uproar started after racially offensive posts. The controversy started after these posts including a video on the Chinese social media site Wiebo. The video included a Chinese model using chopsticks to eat the Italian classics of pizza, pasta and spaghetti. Dolce and Gabbana were accused of being racist towards chinas culture and depicting Chinese women in a racist way. The video was removed within 24 hours but it had already been shared widely on social media, where the hashtag #boycottdolcegabbana started to circulate again. This only got worse when direct messages were released from instagram account "Diet Prada" who is known for criticising the fashion industry. The messages intensified the racial accusations and the messages were appalling.    These message explain that the designer Gabbana was against the campaign being banned and continues to make horrible racial comment...

Counterfeit

Image
Counterfeits Counterfeiting has always been a massive issue with luxury designer brands. Cheap imitations of products that aren't always affordable to buy, however everyone wants these products and end up buying a cheap imitation of the product rather than the real one. This lessens sales for the brand itself and brings down the exclusivity of the brand and the original luxury image. On the reverse side many customers who pay good money for authentic Dolce & Gabbana goods could buy something second hand with the seller pretending it is real when really it is fake. This means a lot of customers who want authentic Dolce and Gabbana ends up with fake counterfeit products. According to the article "Faking It" by The Guardian, an average of 11% of products in circulation and being produced are fake. Many years ago, Dolce and Gabbana introduced a hologram system to its collections. "The security hologram comes with an authenticity certificate and with a label atta...
