Racism controversy 2018

Shangai fashion week 2018
Dolce and Gabbana had to postpone a catwalk in Shanghai after an uproar started after racially offensive posts.
The controversy started after these posts including a video on the Chinese social media site Wiebo. The video included a Chinese model using chopsticks to eat the Italian classics of pizza, pasta and spaghetti. Dolce and Gabbana were accused of being racist towards chinas culture and depicting Chinese women in a racist way. The video was removed within 24 hours but it had already been shared widely on social media, where the hashtag #boycottdolcegabbana started to circulate again.
This only got worse when direct messages were released from instagram account "Diet Prada" who is known for criticising the fashion industry. The messages intensified the racial accusations and the messages were appalling.

These message explain that the designer Gabbana was against the campaign being banned and continues to make horrible racial comments about china as a country and the people who live there.
The brand then posted on their instagram claiming that both the Dolce and Gabbana page and Stefano Gabbana's private account had been hacked. It also added "we have nothing but respect for the people of China". Later that week after the show had been postponed a statement was released by the designing duo which states the planned Shanghai event was "something that we created especially with love and passion for china and all the people around the world who love Dolce and Gabbana, what happened this week was very unfortunate not only for us but also for all the people who worked day and night to bring this event to life."
After this many of the top celebrities in China decided they didn't want to attend anymore and many people followed in their footsteps.
The Chinese market is a massive part of consumers for Dolce and Gabbana's and lots of other luxury brands. Due to the offensive comments made a lot of Chinese supporters now will no longer want to buy from this brand. This could be very damaging for the brand and their sales as well as their reputation.
The duo also released an apology video on YouTube on the Dolce and Gabbana Youtube page on the 23rd of November 2018. The video can be watched with both English and Chinese subtitles as the pair speak in Italian.
This apology seems to be sincere and they ask for forgiveness from all of their fans.
